1)Point Guard
A point guards role is to get the ball up the court and co-ordinate the attack. So it is the point guards job to bring the ball up the court and set up plays. Perhaps being the most specialised out of all the positions a point guard is required to have exceptional ball-handling and passing skills. Point guards are probably the most important aspect of a team because without a point guard who plays mistake-free balls, very few teams would be able to win championships. Examples of high profile point guards are Steve Nash(one of my favourite players!), Magic Johnson and Allen Iverson.
2)Shooting Guard
Shooting guards have a similar role to point guards except that shooting guards focus primarily on shooting were as point guards focus on passing. So this requires shooting guards to be able to shoot shots with pinpoint accuracy (both from long and short distance), drive hard to the basket and if need be set up an another player. Because of this shooting guards are usually the teams best scorer and relied upon by the team to get points. Examples of high profile shooting guards are Michael Jordan, Dwanye Wade and Kobe Bryant.
3)Small Forward (My Position)
Small forwards are typically somewhat shorter and leaner than power forwards and centers but, on occasion they are just as tall. In offence they are the perfect balance between being power and shooting orientated, with enough power to score rebounds and play in the close to the post but also able to play more like a shooting guard. So often small forwards are seen playing the role of a shooting guard and vise versa. However some times there are just small forwards, (such as Lebron James) that are able to out muscle centres and are quicker then point guards, these players tend to absolutely dominate on the court. Other examples of small forwards are Larry Bird and Carmello Anthony.
4)Power Forward
Power forwards play a role similar to that of center, playing with their back to the basket on offence and positioned either on the low blocks or against the opposing power forward on defence. However, in most instances, the power forward is asked to shoulder more of a scoring role and somewhat less of a defensive role than a center. Also power forwards tend to be not as tall as centres but more muscular and are expected to be aggressive when pursuing rebounds and scoring points. Examples of power forwards are Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki.
5)Centre
This position is important to both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Centres are usually the tallest players on the court and are often the focal point of their team's offence. A center's duties are just as important on defence. They have to defend the opponent's center (who can also be a monster player) as well as block shots and rebound. Examples of centers are Shaquille O'Neal, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabber.
Sorry if the article was a bit... not well written but I was having a pretty messy day and wanted to get another article out before today, since I'll be busy for some time. As always comments are welcome!
